YAS Rock School

ABOUT
Rock School is for anyone who has ever dreamed of being on the stage with a band. We have an assortment of instruments to choose from including drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and electric bass. We even have spots for singers. Our goal is to put musicians into groups with people who have a similar level of ability. If you already play an instrument, we will partner you with more experienced musicians. If you are just learning or have never played before, we have spots for you too.
Through this program you will learn the basics of playing your instrument as well as how to work together in a musical group. Some of the musical content that we will cover includes some basic rock beats, how to tell the key that a song is in, some basic guitar chords and some bass lines. More advanced participants will learn the basics of improvising, soloing and jamming with the band. We will learn some simple pop and rock and roll songs with the ultimate goal of performing these songs together. Most of all, we will make some noise and have fun.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Dan Turner: I was raised in the Valley, and am very happy to have returned as a member of the Elk Valley RCMP. I began drumming in high school, and continued semi-professionally for several years in the bands Apostrophe, Chupacabra, and The Paperback Writers. I also had the privilege to play percussion for the Malaspina University (Now Vancouver Island University) Concert Band, and the RCMP Depot Marching Band. I currently play drums with the Broken Motorcycle Band, and the Banned. I look forward to sharing my experience with the youth of Sparwood, and showing them the of joy hitting things with sticks.

Carrie Will: One of my favorite lines from a song is “Mama said I was a dancer before I could walk, mmhmm she said I began to sing long before I could talk!” and I think that is a great way to start a musical bio!
Singing has always been a big part of my life, and I started performing publicly in my early teens. I have had the pleasure to sing on stage including two plays, on TV, in contests, and even featured in a film. I been singing with the Fernie Community Choir for the last 11 years as Soprano, Alto, and Tenor. I have sung many genres of music including classical, country, rock, theatre, and blues. I joined The Reluctants in the spring of 2022 as one of the lead singers, and then also joined The Banned as one of the lead singers in the spring of 2023.
I started playing piano when I was 7 and earned up to Royal Conservatory Level 5. While I have allowed my piano skills to become rusty, I can still play and my personal goals include brushing up these skills. I have recently started playing harmonica and would like to learn to play guitar.
I have coached kids for many years in swimming, curling, volleyball, and singing. I look forward to working with youth in encouraging a love of music and finding their voice.

Josh Scholpp: Josh Scholpp has been playing guitar for over 30 years. He has been performing in bands since he was a teen, covering many duties in the process. Mainly known for playing electric or acoustic guitars and singing. But, he has been known to dabble in the bass guitar.
Josh is currently in a band with fellow Rock Band instructors Carry Will and Dan Turner. Their band is called "The Banned". They play everything from Elvis to Metallica.
His influences include Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne and all classic rock and metal.
“I am looking forward to passing on my years of knowledge to the students of Rock School!"
